A könyv Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) irodalomkritikai esszéivel és főbb biográfiai műveivel foglalkozik. A modernista kánon igen széles kontextusába helyezve Strachey pályaművét, a dolgozat azon kritikai esszéi elemzésével indul, amelyek nemcsak irodalmi széles látását bizonyítják, de írójuk alapvető kritikai magatartására, szemléletére is fényt derítenek. Ez a magatartás elutasítja az olyan kritikaiskolát, amely preskriptív tanokon és axiológiai értékelésen alapul. Lytton Strachey fontossága az „Új biográfia” megteremtésével kapcsolatban is megalapozott: mind formában, mind tartalomban megújította a műfajt. „Bio-gráfikus” művei tartalmazzák Strachey elmélkedéseit, illetve meditációját a historiográfia alapvető kérdéseivel kapcsolatban. Így bár a modernizmus gyermeke, azon jócskán túlmutat, hiszen a felvetett problémák elméletileg közelebb állnak a posztmodern, illetve új historicista problémakörhöz, amely az irodalom és történelem szétválasztása ellen emeli fel a hangját, illetve a diszciplínák bonyolult kölcsönhatását vizsgálja.

The focus of this book is on Lytton Strachey's literary critical essays and on his major biographies. By placing his work in the broader context of the Modernist canon, it aims to offer a complete yet far from definitive picture of the writer who wrote 'the first book of the twenties', who has been regarded as one of the cleverest men of his generation and one of the most prominent members of the Bloomsbury Group and who has been known for his stylish ease and elegance. Not only do Strachey's essays provide the ground for advocating his wide critical horizon, they also exemplify his essential critical attitude - the attitude that dismisses a whole critical school of evaluative, prescriptive criticism. His biographies contain the biographer's musings and meditations on his craft and on the question of historiography thus come closer to Postmodernist issues. They point to the 'bio-graphical' tenet whereby our knowledge is mediated through texts, and are tied up with acts of interpretation and narration. Strachey has thus prefigured the Postmodernist and New Historicist claim that challenges the very separation of the literary and the historical. His contestatory stance was directly followed by the historian R.G. Collingwood's theoretical concessions, and Hayden White's statements on narrative configurations could also be said to have started with him.
