Alfred Palestra - Where the Crisis of the Republic Coincides with the Birth of Pataphysics

Ce que vous tenez dans la main est la manifestation imprimée d’Alfred Palestra. À l’origine, le projet a adopté la forme d’un atelier avec un groupe de lycéens de la Cité Scolaire Émile Zola à Rennes, un atelier conçu comme une méthode pour confronter et comprendre de multiples histoires, récits ou narrations. L’atelier visait à développer les facultés d’interprétation d’une constellation historique très particulière : dans cette école, Alfred Jarry aurait presque pu croiser Alfred Dreyfus. C’est en effet dans le gymnase de ce lycée que s’est tenu le second procès Dreyfus en 1898, juste après qu’Alfred Jarry y a passé son baccalauréat. Ce lycée peut donc être pensé comme le berceau d’une avant-garde au moment du cataclysme de la République.

At first, it took shape as a workshop with a group of high school students from Lycée Émile Zola in Rennes, designed as a method to comprehend plural narratives. The workshop aimed to develop skills to interpret a very particular historical constellation: The school was the place where Alfred Jarry almost met Alfred Dreyfus. It served as the location for the second Dreyfus trial in 1898, held just after Jarry had graduated there. The Lycée thus became the cradle of the avant-garde during the cataclysm of the republic.
