Here is a romance of the great conquistadores by a traveller who has explored the wilds of South America already described in his book, Tiger-Man. Opening with a prologue in Spain, this exciting story plunges into the heart of an exhibition adventuring for gold and glory into unconquered lands. Don Pedro de Mendoza's ill-starred band landed on the site of what is now Buenos Aires, but these Spanish grandees, after hardships and troubles with the indians found neither. It is left to Maria Uzcudun, a fisherman's daughter who accompanied the fleet as a nurse to the commander's son, to discard her dreams of jewels and savage splendour and to find happiness some thousand miles up the River Plate, where the handful of Spaniards who survived founded the village of Asuncion in the midst of the jungle.
